Child Support in Charlotte, North Carolina Divorce Cases - Is College Included?

A New Jersey teen made headlines recently when she sued her parents for college expenses after they kicked her out of their home.

This raises the question for many parents in North Carolina who face child support issues. Can a North Carolina Court order a parent to pay college expenses for an adult child?

“The simple answer is ‘no’ – but there are always exceptions to the rule,” explains Kate Miller.

“For example, if a parent agrees to pay for college in a consent order or an out-of-court contract, the Court can enforce those agreements.”

Neither the North Carolina Child Support Guidelines nor the General Statutes require parents to pay for college expenses, however.

If you have questions about child support laws in North Carolina, the attorneys at Miller Bowles Cushing in Charlotte would be happy to meet with you to discuss your case.
